A home for societal transformation

Atelier Gardens is an iconic 6-acre film campus overlooking Berlin’s famous Tempelhof airport. Known as “UFA Studios Tempelhof” and later as “Berliner Union-Film” or “BUFA”, it has been home to the pioneers of film, and is steeped in more than 100 years of film and TV.

Rekindling the site’s pioneering and creative spirit, we are opening up the space, delivering a global home for the pioneers of profound societal change. The campus is welcoming activists, social entrepreneurs, documentary film makers, human rights lawyers, educators, growers, artists, etc. to tell the next chapter of its story, together.

The site’s motto “Celebrating Soul, Soil, Society” underlines the ambition for a holistic approach to regenerative life in the city, and the belief that human beings, in principle, are capable of making a helpful contribution to life on Earth.

Soil

We borrow the planet from our children and we intend to leave it in better shape than we found it. We regenerate the campus by creating space for plants, improving the ground, providing a healthy habitat for our human and non-human tenants.

Soul

We want Atelier Gardens to be a space for mutual inspiration. We provide natural, restorative, and well-built spaces and host events that support self-connection, regeneration, and creativity. Through this, we want to facilitate the creation and evolution of knowledge.

Society

We actively foster a community based on inclusivity and openness. We value local connections with our neighbours as much as our global network of change makers. We cultivate the 'social soil' by creating opportunities for new relationships.

Celebration

We focus on the abundance of all that we have rather than on what we lack. We celebrate our potential to transform ourselves, our communities, and our environment.

Bauhaus Earth

Bauhaus Erde conducts interdisciplinary research on how the built environment can become a driver of climate protection. Through transformation studies, modeling, and life cycle assessments (LCA), we investigate renewable building materials, evaluate their supply and demand at the regional and global levels, and analyze value chains—from the ecosystems from which they originate to their use and reuse in construction.
