D.: Rubén Abruña
DE 2023, 85 min.

In search of answers, director Rubén Abruña embarks on an investigative and entertaining quest through 16 cities on 4 continents. He follows the trail of faeces from the long sewers of Paris to a huge sewage treatment plant in Chicago.
Can excrement be used to grow food and alleviate the impending fertiliser shortage?

He meets the Poop Pirates from Uganda, and in rural Sweden an engineer shows him a dry toilet that produces fertiliser from urine. In Hamburg and Geneva, he discovers residential complexes with decentralised sewage treatment plants that are not connected to the sewerage system and generate electricity and fertiliser from human excrement.

Toilet Tour

Learn how Atelier Gardens has developed sustainable toilets: Rainwater on the Atelier Gardens campus is recycled and used for both plant irrigation and sanitary facilities. Rainwater from TON 1, TON 2, and the driveway is collected and stored in a 21-cubic-meter tank behind TON 1. This not only reduces runoff into the city’s drainage system but also saves on wastewater fees. The sanitary facilities at TON 1 are equipped with waterless urinals and special urine-diverting toilets that separate urine and feces. This prototype system saves drinking water, reduces wastewater, and recycles valuable micronutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen.
